Chattogram, still widely known internationally as Chittagong, is Bangladesh’s second-largest city and its most important seaport.
Sitting between the Bay of Bengal, the Karnaphuli River, and green hills in southeastern Bangladesh, it feels very different from the dense urban sprawl of Dhaka.
The city combines busy markets, shipyards, mosques, colonial-era landmarks, beaches, hills, and one of South Asia’s most important commercial ports.
It is also the gateway to Cox’s Bazar and the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
Chattogram can be fascinating for experienced travelers, but it requires more preparation than most Asian city breaks.
Heavy traffic, political demonstrations, petty crime, flooding, cyclones, terrorism concerns, food and water illness, and limited pedestrian infrastructure all affect the safety picture.
Warnings & Dangers in Chattogram
OVERALL RISK: MEDIUM
Chattogram has a medium overall risk for travelers. Most visitors can explore the city without serious incidents, but Bangladesh currently requires increased caution because of political unrest, crime, terrorism concerns, and occasional security incidents. Chattogram city itself is safer for travelers than the nearby Chittagong Hill Tracts, which carry substantially greater security concerns.
TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: HIGH
Traffic is one of Chattogram’s biggest everyday dangers. Roads can be congested, driving is aggressive, buses may stop unexpectedly, and pedestrians frequently share space with cars, rickshaws, motorcycles, and CNG auto-rickshaws. Use reputable ride-hailing services or hotel-arranged vehicles, wear seatbelts when available, and avoid long-distance road travel at night.
PICKPOCKETS RISK: MEDIUM
Pickpocketing and bag theft can occur in markets, railway stations, bus terminals, shopping districts, and crowded streets. Keep phones out of sight when not needed and carry wallets in secure pockets. Foreign travelers may attract additional attention, so avoid displaying expensive cameras, watches, jewelry, or large amounts of money.
NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: HIGH
Chattogram is exposed to cyclones, storm surge, monsoon flooding, flash floods, landslides, intense rainfall, lightning, and extreme heat. It attracts families, couples, vendors, and visitors looking across the Bay of Bengal.
Stay in active sections, secure valuables, and avoid entering rough water without checking conditions.
During cyclones, storms, or unusually high tides, stay away from the shoreline completely.
Chattogram War Cemetery
The Commonwealth War Cemetery is one of the city’s calmest and most organized historical attractions.
Its maintained grounds provide a quiet contrast to Chattogram’s traffic and commercial streets.
Visit during official daytime hours and behave respectfully.
The surrounding area is relatively central, making it easy to combine with other sightseeing.
Foy’s Lake
Foy’s Lake is a popular recreational area surrounded by hills and greenery.
The established visitor sections are generally safe for families and tourists.
Use recognized entrances and avoid wandering into isolated hills or forested areas alone.
Heavy rain can make paths slippery, and hillside terrain deserves additional caution during the monsoon season.
Batali Hill
Batali Hill offers broad views across the city and is one of Chattogram’s recognizable elevated areas.
Daytime visits are preferable because paths and surrounding roads become quieter after dark.
Wear comfortable shoes and avoid visiting during heavy rain, when slopes may become slippery and landslide risk increases.
Places to Avoid in Chattogram
Chittagong Hill Tracts Without Proper Planning
The Chittagong Hill Tracts are not the same as Chattogram city.
Rangamati, Bandarban, and Khagrachari have experienced armed violence, kidnapping, intercommunal conflict, and security operations.
Travel restrictions can apply, and foreigners may need advance permission or notification.
Do not casually add these areas to a Chattogram itinerary without checking current conditions and requirements.
Political Demonstrations
Avoid demonstrations, political rallies, strikes, and large gatherings anywhere in the city.
Political events in Bangladesh can quickly involve stone throwing, vandalism, roadblocks, arson, or clashes with police.
If you encounter a gathering, turn around early.
Do not stop to photograph the event or attempt to pass through a roadblock.
Landslide-Prone Hillsides During Monsoon
Some informal neighborhoods are built on or beneath steep hills.
During heavy rain, landslides can occur with little warning.
Visitors have little reason to explore these areas, especially during June through September.
Follow evacuation warnings and never approach a hillside after visible soil movement or prolonged heavy rainfall.
Port and Industrial Zones
Chattogram is a working commercial port with container facilities, warehouses, shipyards, heavy trucks, and restricted infrastructure.
Avoid wandering around port entrances or industrial compounds.

Traffic-heavy Chattogram can become surprisingly quiet on individual side streets at night.

Use a ride-hailing service or hotel-arranged driver rather than walking long distances after dark.
Safety Tips for Traveling to Chattogram
- Use reliable transportation whenever possible. Traffic is probably the risk you will encounter most frequently. Arrange airport transfers through your hotel or use a reputable ride-hailing service. Avoid entering random vehicles offered by persistent drivers. When traveling longer distances, choose established bus or train operators and avoid unnecessary overnight road journeys.
- Stay away from every political demonstration. Bangladesh has experienced periods of serious political unrest, and demonstrations can change character quickly. If you notice crowds, police formations, roadblocks, fires, or chanting groups, leave immediately. Do not photograph the situation or stay nearby simply because other people appear relaxed.
- Treat monsoon rain seriously. Heavy rainfall can flood roads quickly and trigger landslides around Chattogram’s hills. Do not walk or drive through deep floodwater. Roads can contain open drains, damaged pavement, or strong currents that are impossible to see beneath muddy water. Delay sightseeing during extreme rainfall.
- Drink only safe water. Use sealed bottled water or a reliable purification system. Check that bottle caps have not previously been opened. Avoid questionable ice, untreated juices, and uncooked food that may have been washed in contaminated water. Carry oral rehydration salts in case stomach illness causes dehydration.
- Cross roads defensively. Pedestrians should never assume a vehicle will stop. Use pedestrian bridges and crossings where available, watch motorcycles coming from unexpected directions, and cross with local pedestrian traffic when possible. Put your phone away while crossing. Chattogram traffic demands your full attention.
- Keep phones and wallets out of sight. Avoid holding an expensive smartphone casually near a busy road, market, or station. Carry bags across your body with zippers closed and keep your passport somewhere secure. If you need directions, step inside a hotel, restaurant, or shop instead of standing on the sidewalk displaying your phone.
- Dress modestly. Bangladesh is socially conservative. Lightweight clothing that covers the shoulders and knees is a good choice for both comfort and respect. Women may feel more comfortable with loose trousers or long skirts and modest tops. Religious sites may require additional coverage and removing shoes.
- Avoid nighttime wandering. Chattogram is not a city where I would recommend long spontaneous walks after midnight. Traffic remains dangerous, while quiet areas create additional crime risks. Have your accommodation address saved offline and arrange your return transportation before leaving a restaurant or evening event.
- Do not casually travel into the Hill Tracts. Bandarban, Rangamati, and Khagrachari may look like obvious additions to a Chattogram itinerary, but their security situation is different from the city. Travel restrictions and advance notification requirements may apply. Check current conditions carefully and use an experienced operator if travel is permitted.
- Have a cyclone plan. If visiting during cyclone season, know where your hotel’s safest interior areas are and keep devices charged. Follow evacuation instructions immediately. Keep identification, medication, water, cash, and essential electronics together. Never visit the beach during a cyclone warning simply to watch the waves.
So... How Safe Is Chattogram Really?
Chattogram is not an inherently hostile city for travelers, but it requires more situational awareness than many established Asian tourism destinations.
The city is commercially important, heavily populated, and accustomed to foreigners through shipping, business, aid organizations, and international travel.
Most visitors who use trusted transportation and stay in established accommodation will complete their trips without serious incidents.
The biggest everyday threat is traffic.
Congestion, unpredictable driving, busy roads, and weak pedestrian infrastructure create a constant risk of accidents.
Food and water illness is another practical concern, particularly for first-time visitors to Bangladesh.
Weather can become much more serious.
Chattogram lies in a cyclone-prone coastal region and receives intense monsoon rainfall.
Flooding and landslides can quickly disrupt transportation.
The political and security environment also keeps the city from receiving a low-risk rating.
Demonstrations can turn violent, extremist threats remain present, and neighboring Chittagong Hill Tracts have additional security problems not shared equally by the city itself.
Overall, I rate Chattogram as medium risk.
Experienced travelers who plan transport carefully, avoid political activity, protect valuables, drink safe water, and respect extreme weather can visit successfully.
It is a fascinating city, but definitely not one for careless travel.

Airports
Shah Amanat International Airport is Chattogram’s main airport, located in Patenga, roughly 18 kilometers south of the railway station. Domestic and international flights operate from the airport. Traffic can make transfer times unpredictable, so arrange a reputable taxi or hotel pickup and allow generous time before departing flights.
Travel Insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended. Choose coverage for medical treatment, hospitalization, evacuation, theft, cancellation, flooding, cyclone disruption, and transportation delays.
