How Much Does It Cost to Live In Voronezh?

Voronezh is a city in Voronezh Oblast, which is very close to the Ukraine border and its importance lies in the fact that it is an important railway junction with lines to Moscow, Rostov-on-the-Don and Kiev.

It is often referred to as the capital of Chernozemye due to its relatively large population.

Voronezh is the city of students, with its many institutes and universities and the prices there are much lower than in most cities of Russia.

Most students can afford living in this peaceful city since it’s not expensive.

RESTAURANTS

It may take you some time to find an appropriate restaurant or fast-food, but it will be worth it because most Russian cities offer great international food (and delicious Russian specialties) for relatively low prices. The cheapest restaurants will offer meals for only 7$, and a pint of beer in a downtown bar will cost you 1$.

MARKETS

If you’re in need of a supermarket in the center of the city, you can head off to the Soviet style Utyuzhok, modern Poisk shopping center or Tsentrtorg supermarket halfway between Utyuzhok and SERW. You can always buy plenty of groceries in supermarkets but you can also find fresh produce and fish in open markets that pop up daily throughout the city.

TRANSPORTATION

Cheap transportation is one of the good sides of this city. There’s not too much traffic and taxis are actually very cheap, starting from $1. Though there isn’t a metro line, a huge part of the city is actually a pedestrian zone and you can get to most places on foot. The prices of public transport are reasonable and the buses move quickly through the city.

UTILITIES (MONTHLY)

However reasonable the price of utilities in Voronezh is, keep in mind that the bills tend to skyrocket during winter (because of all the heating). Still, compared to other cities in Russia, utilities are very cheap. For an apartment of 85m2 all basic utilities, including electricity, gas, garbage services, heating and cooling cost around 90$.

SPORTS & LEISURE

The city of Voronezh offers many opportunities to practice sports and stay active. In winter you can go to skate on Lenin square. In spring, you can go to the Olympic (at the outskirts of town) to ride bicycles, skate and just take a walk in the woods. If you want to stay fit while indoors, no worries – your gym or fitness club membership will cost you only 26$ a month.

CLOTHING & SHOES

The shopping centers include Grad, which is actually one of the largest in Russia, Mezhdunarodny (in the very centre of the city and mentioned as a place where you can go find groceries, too), and many others. Here, you can buy clothing and shoes but the prices for some things are higher than expected: for example, while quality jeans cost around 47$, sneakers will be as much as 80$.

RENT PER MONTH

Rent isn’t too expensive, but it does largely depend on where you want to live and the size of the apartment you’re renting. If you’re looking for an apartment in the very center of Voronezh, it will cost you around 220$. However, if you have your eye on the Voronezh suburbs, the price will drop to at around 150$.

As expected, the biggest chunk of the paycheck of Voronezh’s citizens gets spent on food, that takes up well over 30% of one’s entire income.
