How Much Does It Cost to Live In Turin?

Fourth in size city of Italy, Turin is known as a major tourist attraction that is very important to visit, yes less expensive than some other metropolitan areas like Milan or Florence.

In the end, like with everything, it all depends on your lifestyle. Turin used to be a capital so of course you’ll be able to find fancy places as well, expensive food, apartments to rent, etc. but you’ll also be able to get by with less money than you would in Rome, for instance.

Apart from it being cheap, Turin has plenty of character and the real feel of a capital city.

RESTAURANTS

Going out is cheap, you can eat a fine dinner with friends in a restaurant with local red wine for around 20$. If you want to save some money, a pizza place will cost from 10 to 20$ depending what you drink with your pizza and what else you take. There are a few very inexpensive restaurants throughout Torino where you can eat well for 10–15$.

MARKETS

When it comes to shopping for groceries, Turin is perfect, since you’ll find cheap and convenient open air markets where fruit and vegetables from southern Italy and northern Africa are sold at 2$/kg. If you plan on cooking at home, food in general is reasonably cheap. You can also take advantage of the weekly offers at Coop department stores. The open markets work Sundays at 3–4 pm, and expect prices to be twice as lower.

TRANSPORTATION

The good thing about Turin is that everything is at walkable distance, so if you are willing to walk 40 minutes to 1h you can save a bunch of money and basically go everywhere walking. If you want to rely on public transportation, though, a monthly fee is around 40$, while a one-way ticket is a reasonable 1.70$.

UTILITIES (MONTHLY)

The basic utilities like gas, electricity, heating and cooling will cost you definitely 100$ over if you’re living in a one-bedroom small apartment, and for a larger apartment (if you have a family) of about 85m2 the utilities are somewhere around 160$, which is more expensive than in Rome, for instance, and a bit above Italy’s average.

SPORTS & LEISURE

Though pastime activities are rather expensive in Italy, Turin is not as expensive as it can be, when it comes to leisure. Some activities like cinema, that are generally pricey, and cost about 10$ a ticket, have special prices for students. A fitness club membership, however, costs around 50$ and some other cities offer lower prices for sports activities.

CLOTHING & SHOES

Turin, like most other Italian cities to date, offers a shopping dream to everyone who is rich enough to go shopping in Italy. This might be the reason why the prices are high at even the regular chain stores that exist around the world: jeans cost around 90$, while sneakers cost a bit more than that.

RENT PER MONTH

The closest thing to an apartment would be renting a studio, and one in the downtown area would cost you around 550$ dollars a month. If you’re looking for a legitimate apartment in the same location, it will cost you around 700$ a month, and if you’re looking to save some money, an apartment on the outskirts of town will cost you around 500$. Like everywhere though, the cost depends on the size, condition, and location of the property.

How Does the Average Person Spend Their Money in Turin?

Single biggest expense in Turin is food, though that’s pretty much relative and depending on your personal lifestyle.

Next expense for an average citizen of Turin is going to be, of course, rent.

Restaurants are next, which is no wonder in Italy, the corner of the world famous for good food and wine, and filled with gorgeous restaurants at every corner.

Transportation is necessary, though badly organized, but everyone uses it daily so it amounts to a rather large expense.

The last on the list are clothing, sports and leisure.
